AS I enjoy the holiday season the number one thing on my list is family. I have been lucky enough to enjoy my family. As 2008 comes to an end we as Canadians mourn another Canadian soldier coming home in a box. I ask myself “are we getting used to seeing a group of soldiers with a casket on their shoulders and a Canadian flag draped over it. Seems to me a few years back there would be some protests, saying Canada as a peace keeping country is obviously in the wrong spot if we are losing soldiers. Has our role in the world changed a bit? Are our soldiers in more danger than our government would like us, the general public, to know? Do our young men and women that join the military know that they are no longer on a free ride. I will never attempt to understand the reasons for a war. I do understand what a peace keeping mission is. I don’t think 100 dead soldiers in one year is a peace keeping mission.[tags]family,peace,war,soldiers,men,women,dead/[tags]

    what the

    what the

Well me and my favorite city dweller have had some good teasing over whether living in small town or big city is better. We both have good arguments, but this is my blog so obviously everthing about a small town is better. The number one thing today that I know for a fact is the country drivers are better. In twenty four hours of visiting the city I saw three accidents or the after effects of an accident. There is a lot of traffic and roads were icy but why don’t we slow down people. Finishing up some Christmas shopping we were treated to some of the finest automobile operating comedy narrated by, my partner. Coming around a clover leaf that we see a van on our left facing us. Its one way traffic, another truck is also parked there, it too is stuck. We didn’t stop I wasn’t driving, “they are that stupid to get themselves into that mess they can figure out how to get out  themselves,” she commented. Then an elderly lady turned in front of us with out a signal light on. She knew exactly where she was going we stopped and laughed at her. The final act of this comedy was a very serious looking lady. She was trying to squeeze into traffic making a right hand turn. The problem was her right front tire had rode up on the ice and snow and dropped over the curb. So as she continued forward it was like she was stuck on the rail road track. Her car followed the curb around, she did not know why. Kept cranking her wheel to the left until her car bucked off the curb and away she went still looking like it was someone else’s fault. In the spring you will be able to walk the ditch pick up enough parts that when you get to the north end of the city you will be able to drive back. I love comedy and I am a people watcher so this day I had in the city was the one of the best. If you are one of those people that gets all tense when it comes to city driving relax. Take your time slow down and smile you are about to see one of life’s best comedy shows ever.

What like yours is any better

What like yours is any better

Well its ugly cold outside. Winter took its time getting here but, it has come in harsh. Windchills of minus 45. I know winter is coming every year. I know that after November 1 it could be very cold the next day. Yet every year, I have to put up Christmas lights with frozen hands. I have to worry about the watering bowl being plugged in. Wonder where the short blue cord is to plug my car in. Its like when spring hits I assume winter will never happen again. I am not the only one that has that surprised look on their face. I am not the only guy that showed up at work with no mitts, no winter boots and wearing a bunny hug(hoody for all hip dudes). Then about three days into our first winter storm most of us have got into the routine. The funny but warm winter hats show up. You know the Elmer Fudd, dead racoon looking things. Most of these hats have been under the seat of the truck all summer. They all have a dirty smelly yet very comfortable look. Makes me laugh. If I walked into work in July with a cap with the brim turned up, every guy there would make fun of me. Now that its deep freeze weather its like the funnier the hat the cooler you are. Guys with oil stained Gulf oil toques hold there heads up high and proud. The guy with the racoon hat looked like he needed some dewormer. Patches of hair missing I started scratching my head as soon as I saw him. So as get you ready to head out, stop take a look in the mirror I am sure it will make you smile.{tags}dewormer,oil,freeze,racoon,cooler,dead,winter{/tags]

    Tonozzi gets it on one

    Tonozzi gets it on one

Garrett Tonozzi and Kinney Harrell were a unbelievable 3.6. This was the fastest time in round 5 and the teams third win of the 2008 NFR. The run is shown on ESPN.com on a highlight video. The heading horse looks like he is about 10 feet from the heading box when he goes left. The heeler gets the steer roped clean and comes tight quick no rope slides. The team came into the finals in 15th spot but now sit in 5th thanks to $50,300 in NFR earnings. Very impressive. I laugh at some rodeo fans and how we expect a record breaker every run or ride. We think that every time Cody Ohl backs in the box it should be an automatic six second run. Reality is we are watching athletes that have grown up training in a sport they love. These are not people that rope once a month or ride there horse for a couple of days then head off to a rodeo. To prove just hough tough this sport is. Round 4 was the first NFR go round win for Britany Pozzi-Pharr. She has competed in 43 rounds and finally got her first win. A lady that has dedicated the last 10 years of her life to her sport and it took 43 runs to get a win. How many of you would work at the same job 43 days in a row before you got paid. Have your boss tell you,”no thats not good enough to get paid today sorry come back tomorro.” The dedication these athletes have and the sacrifices they make are amazing.

What is my dad going to say

What is my dad going to say

I am exactly between 0 and 80 and my partner is way younger. That will get me some brownie points. We are expecting and  the due date is closing in. I am geting very excited and she is,well you know she is um well, well she is 8 months pregnant. I feel sorry for her, I truly do. When she bends to get something off the floor it looks as if her hip is out of place. When she moves she groans and growls and sometimes speaking looks painfull. Might have lost any brownie points I gained. Her son does a perfect imitation of mom picking something off the floor. When he first did it I laughed after I saw her laugh of course. This brings me to my point. On the radio tonight they talked about an 80 year old lady from India that is pregnant. I wonder what her great grand children think about that? Her 77 year old husband says he is excited for the baby. When your 77 I think excitement would be waking up in the morning! That is insane. If they lived in Canada they would get old age security and child tax credit at the same time. I think Viagra better put that kid through college. See what happens to me when the NFR is not televised, I have to digest all this other useless information.

National Finals Rodeo(NFR) is on in Vegas. Three rounds have gone by and I am pouting. I can’t get it on my satelite dish. I have been surfing the net hard to find any little tid bits to keep me up to date. ESPN has some good reports as well as the PRCA web site. Someone is posting the barrel racing on UTube. Bits and pieces but better than nothing. Team roping field is a great mixture of young and old. My all time favorite team Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper are doing ok. Two clean runs but no cash yet. That arena is so narrow the headers have about three jumps and there in the wall. It takes a great heading horse to to handle that arena. The one neat story I have found is Billy Etbauer. 45 years old he is still going strong. Saturday night round three and the eliminator pen of bucking horses. There were only six qualified rides out of fifteen.  He draws BlueToo from Canadian contractor Shane Franklin. I watched this horse throw a friend of mine 20 feet at the Home on the Range match bronc riding in Medora, ND. That would be worth the price of admission just to watch Etbauer and Blue Too go head to head. The score was 89.5 points and a first place win. He has $37000 so far at the finals. I watched a video of the ride, and Etbauer’s rein hand is above his head. That guy is amazing.
